Como La Flor

Being a Mexican-American kid born in Texas in the ’80s and growing up in the ’90s, Selena was everywhere in my life. Her voice was a powerful presence in our community—so much that in 4th grade, our school play had us dressed as caballeros dancing to Baila Esta Cumbia, haha. And as a native Houstonian, I was lucky enough to witness her unforgettable performance at the Astrodome on an old school tube TV—the last one before she was killed. That’s why the maroon velvet background she’s laying on in this piece holds such meaning. (color of the outfit she wore that night)
